Lay Leadership

Lay Speaking

The United Methodist Church trains lay people for leadership through the Lay Speaking Ministries program.

The primary focus of this program is pulpit supply – filling in as worship leader – for pastors when they take a Sunday off.

After completion of the Basic Lay Speaking class, the student becomes a Local Lay Speaker, qualified to assist in their local church.

Advanced Lay Speaking courses are available on many topics. After completion of an advanced class, and an interview with the district committee, a Lay Speaker can be Certified.

Certified Lay Speakers are qualified to provide pulpit supply beyond the local church.

Pulpit Supply is not the only function of the Lay Speaker program. Participation in the Lay Speaker program will provide you with skills that will make you a better leader in whatever area of service you choose within the church.

More information on Lay Speaking Ministries can be found at www.layspeakingministries.org or on the Southeast District page of www.minnesotaumc.org
